Louie Cagasan and Pam Robertson have been working with the Philippines Department of Education (DepEd) to develop professional development modules to support teachers to improve their use of formative assessment in the classroom. This work builds on the evidence base from previous studies which showed that classroom assessment in the Philippines is transforming to include greater recognition of student progress and promoting the use of adaptive teaching to improve student learning. ACTRC together with DepEd is piloting five professional development modules in two schools. The teachers started in October 2017 and are expected to complete the fifth module by December 2017. They are being supported by visits to their classrooms to provide feedback on their formative assessment practices. The visits are designed to gauge the effectiveness of the modules and inform revision of the module content and activities. At the end of this project, the professional development modules will be available for large scale trialling.
