ACTRC researcher, Dr Romylyn Metila, gave a presentation at a protocol development workshop on contextualisation of mother tongue-based teaching learning materials in Mandaluyong, 3-5 May, 2016. The workshop, hosted by DepEd and Save the Children, outlined the processes for contextualisation of teaching learning materials in the mother tongue, described the standards, guidelines, tools and focal points for each process, and explored key functions for effective implementation at the school, district, division, region and central office level. Dr Metila presented on best practices and emerging issues of materials development in the early years of MTB-MLE implementation, drawing on the findings of ACTRC’s MTB-MLE project, which has identified emerging issues in four different dimensions of MTB-MLE implementation: language, materials, instruction, and program. Dr Metila\’s presentation focused on the challenges faced and strategies used by teachers in the Materials dimension. Best practices on materials development, particularly on contextualization, were shared. The succeeding open forum centered on materials procurement problems and how the updated language mapping data can help improve the efficiency of materials delivery.
