Vale Professor Patrick Griffin

The Assessment, Curriculum and Technology Research Centre (ACTRC) is deeply grateful to Prof. Patrick Griffin for profoundly shaping our understanding of assessment. He has fundamentally shaped ACTRC’s approach to assessment research and practice.

The University of Melbourne’s Public Statement:

The University of Melbourne mourns the loss of Professor Patrick Griffin, a distinguished scholar and researcher who made significant contributions to the field of educational assessment.

Professor Griffin held the Chair of Education (Assessment) and directed the Assessment Research Centre at the Faculty of Education for more than 25 years. He built the Centre into a world-renowned research unit, attracting doctoral students from around the globe, and regularly hosting international visiting fellows. He also served with distinction in leadership roles as Associate Dean and Deputy Dean during his time at the Faculty.

Professor Griffin’s work in educational assessment has left an indelible mark on the field both in Australia and internationally. His research focused on item response modelling applications to performance assessment with a formative focus. His 2014 publication, “Assessment for Teaching” by Cambridge University Press, stands as a testament to his commitment to linking assessment with effective teaching practices, as part of his broader contribution of more than 30 published books and more than 200 journal articles.

As one of only six Australian Fellows of the International Academy of Education, Professor Griffin’s expertise was widely recognised. His international influence was further acknowledged when he received the UNESCO Research Medal in 2005, awarded by the Assembly of Ministers of Education from Southern African nations for his work as a psychometric project team leader in the region. He was also awarded the John Smythe medal for excellence in research for his work on profiling literacy development. On his retirement from the University, he was awarded the title of Professor Emeritus.

The University community extends its deepest condolences to Professor Griffin’s family, friends, and colleagues. His pioneering work and dedication to improving educational outcomes will continue to influence the field for generations to come.
